Program: Book of Arts in Italy
You know when you wake up on very important days, such as your birthday, and it is your first thought when you wake up?
“It’s my birthday today” you think, with your head still on the pillow and your eyes hardly open.
It felt a lot like that today when I woke up in my friend’s bed, after staying the night in her house to be closer to the airport.
“I’m going to Italy today!”
I have been wanting to go on this trip almost all of college. I first heard of Book Arts in Italy my sophomore year, but the trip was a bit more expensive than I was willing to pay that year.
My junior year I finally applied, but was not accepted. I gave it one more shot this year, with limited savings and an expectation of not being selected. When I was accepted, I had great fears that my money would not stretch far enough to make this trip possible.
I wish you could have seen my face after leaving the financial aid building when they told me that it was very possible to pay for this program.
Even now as we drive to the airport it is all so surreal, it still doesn’t feel like I’ll be waking up in Italy tomorrow.
I can feel the excitement building from the tips of my toes all the way to the top of my head. I’m nervous of course, but I’m so incredibly grateful that this opportunity is actually happening after three years of imagining what it would be like. I know I’ll be a different person when I come back, and hope to change for the better!
