Major: Tourism & Travel

My family is pretty aware of its roots in Europe, which has made my trip all the more fun. I’ve been trying to travel to the places I know I have family from, so this time around I went to Hungary! Of my great grandparents, the only who lived long enough for me to remember was my great grandmother on my mom’s side. I remember visiting her with my grandma as a little kid. When you’re three, you don’t really care or know about heritage, so I would usually sit under the nursing home’s piano and play with the little dog statue while I waited and watched my grandma and great grandma talking on the couch.
My great grandma was 100% Hungarian. Since my grandma has passed, I don’t really know much else about her. But, that doesn’t mean I don’t want to feel close to her or that heritage. Going to Budapest doesn’t automatically mean I know everything, but I did feel like I knew a little more about her life when I was sitting in restaurants and eating goulash. Also, if you ever go to Budapest, please eat all of the goulash you can. It’s actually one of the best things I’ve ever eaten.
My family’s history aside, Budapest is a really nice city. It was clean, the streets were pretty, so many of the historical buildings were intact. I fell in love with it, honestly. If you ever have the chance to go, there are a few must do things (which includes the goulash).
First of all, go to St. Stephen’s Basilica. It’s going to be full of tourists, but it’s so worth it. It’s beautiful. You can climb to the top and view the whole city, with no interuptions. Budapest still has the rule that no building can be taller than the basilica, so you really can see the whole city. Afterwards, pop into California Coffee Company right by the basilica and please get an iced coffee. Seriously, I went there everyday because it tasted so good.
Of course, you have to go to the thermal baths. We only got to check out one, but it was so refreshing. You also need to check out Fisherman’s Bastion. It’s this beautiful area with a view of the city. While you’re at it, on your way there stop to get a chimney cake. Literally one of the best things I have ever eaten.
Lastly, ice cream. Gelarto Rosa is amazing. The literally shape your ice cream into a rose. It’s pretty, and it tastes good because they have you favorite flavors and some unique ones.
Budapest is a city you need to go to when you’re in Europe. It’s beautiful, the culture is amazing, and the food is the best.
