English and Japanese major
Doshisha University, Japan
Academic Year 2016-2017
As I sit here wasting my summer away, it dawned on me how quickly my departure date is approaching. I leave September sixth, and have Almost a twenty hour flight before I land in Japan,. Because of layovers and time differences, I will arrive in Japan September 8th at around 1pm. From there, I have to take a train to Kyoto, where I will meet with representatives from the school who will take me there. It all sounds straight forward and simple, and I can only hope it goes as smoothly as it sounds.
As a Japanese major, it only made sense that I would end up in Japan one day, and why not do it while I’m in school? It’s probably one of the biggest adventures I’ll have so far in my life, and I’m both excited and terrified. Excited for the new experiences and new friends I’ll make. Excited to learn more about Japanese culture and language. I’m terrified of being alone in a foreign country. Typically, when I’m confused about something or don’t know what to do, I call my mom or my dad. I won’t necessarily be able to do that while abroad, and even if I could, they might not be able to help me. I hope this experience will teach me to be more flexible in new situations, and I hope this will give me a wider world view. I also hope that I can use this blog not only to help me have a connection to my friends at home and help me put my experiences somewhere where I can look back and really remember everything that happened, but also help other people who are looking to study, or otherwise travel, abroad with their f
ears and help them feel like something as daunting as living in a foreign country for so long isn’t as impossible as it may seem.
