Three more weeks! The exclamation point in the last sentence may look like excitement but in all truth, it’s a symbol of panic. In three weeks, I will be driven to Canada, get on a plane, stay in a hotel in a foreign country, get on another plane, have a layover, get on another plane, arrive in Santander and take a taxi to my host family house. I will then live for two months and be immersed in the Spanish Culture. The norms I am used to will be changed and my vulnerabilities will be wide open. My biggest fears will come true and be the hot sauce poured into those wide open cuts of vulnerability.
If you are an anxious person, like myself, I advise you to go study abroad. The biggest thing that I have learned about anxiety is that you must continually face those anxieties in order to beat the fear. I will always have anxiety. I am sure at many points in my trip I will face anxiety. Yet, I am going. I am living my fear in anticipation of growth.
