Majors: Entrepreneurship and Nonprofit Leadership
University of Cape Town, South Africa
The courses that I am taking at the University of Cape Town (UCT) are:
- Policy and Administration
- Political Economy of South Africa and the Social Service Professions
- Intro to Sociology
- Global Engagement & Community Service
There are a lot of differences between the university here and back in the U.S., and this is because UCT is based on the British system. For example, I have basically each course every day, exactly as it is in high school in the U.S. for 45 minutes each. Then for some courses, we have a 1-hour tutorial once a week to help us dig deeper into the course material and gain better understanding in what we are doing overall (exams, essays, etc.). I like this system SO much better than the U.S.; I am not sure why the U.S. is not set up this way. I feel like with this system, I am actually learning a lot more about the subjects and it is easier to maintain my concentration in lectures.
Also, there are a lot of protests going on in South Africa and on all of the university campuses right now, so in each classroom, this is an open platform to talk about these issues and relate it directly to what we are learning and all of the concepts. This is especially true in my Sociology course!
